Spelling House Example

To reinforce the spelling of PBJ and L-C words using the Stevenson Seven Special Steps for spelling and eliminate the frustration that occurs for many students when attempting to produce correct handwriting for numerous words.

  3. Contrasting color of construction paper for roof of house if desired

    1. Spelling House MasterPDF
    2. Letter Master 1 PDF
    3. Letter Master 2 PDF
    4. Letter Master 3 PDF
    5. Letter Master 4 PDF

Assembly

  1. Fold the house pocket chart as directed.
  2. Complete as directed in small print.
  3. Copy the letters onto card stock. (It is sometimes helpful to use different colors for each student in a group, thus making it easier for the student to quickly gather their letters and return them to their bag at the end of the activity.)
  4. Laminate the letters and place with mat in a bag.

Procedure

  1. Pass out Spelling House set containing house pocket chart and letters student has mastered via the Stevenson Program to each student. Identify the appropriate rooms by questioning the students. Follow the question guide found in the beginning Level Stevenson Spelling Manual.
  2. Instruct students to place their letter on their desk.
  3. Dictate a spelling word.
  4. Use the Seven Special Spelling Steps to assist the student in determining which letters to place in each room.
  5. Repeat words as necessary.
  6. When you feel all students are done say "Show Me" and students turn their house towards you. This enables you to check the entire group at a glance. If you see mistakes, say, "Some of our brains have played tricks, listen to the word again" and repeat the word.
  7. Allow students to remove and replace letters until they have the correct spelling. Use any appropriate prompts from the Stevenson program.
